No efficacious vaccine is available for human schistosomiasis, and the control and treatment of the disease rely almost exclusively on praziquantel (PZQ), the only effective drug against all schistosome species infecting humans. Schistosomes are large metazoan pathogens that parasitize over 200 million people worldwide, resulting in up to 300,000 deaths per year.
